OCTO Provided Mapping Support for HESMA’s June Reporting of Monthly Suspicious Activity Report

OCTO’s GIS program provided mapping support in July for the June reporting of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) Monthly Suspicious Activity Report (SAR). HSEMA regularly receives suspicious activity submissions from various sources around the region. These reports are documented by the Washington Regional Threat Analysis Center. OCTO’s GIS program works with this team on a monthly schedule to verify and map where reports of suspicious activity have occurred. These activities include breaches or attempted intrusions, surveillance and observations, testing and probing of security as well as activity that is not clearly defined. Maps provided by OCTO and delivered to HSEMA are then shared with regional partners such as Virginia and Maryland emergency fusion centers. The data is also shared with partner federal programs that are engaged with homeland security. The next Suspicious Activity Report will be for July in the first weeks of August. information that must be made available to the public through their websites.

DC’s ArcGIS Online and OpenData Portals Featured at the 2014 Esri GIS User Conference

OCTO has been working to provide new ways of creating quick, useful and interactive web maps – while also making geospatial data accessible. OCTO built many web maps that are publicly available, but these do not always meet the immediate and specific needs of DC agencies. DC agencies now have access to DC’s ArcGIS Online organization and OpenData websites to meet these needs without having to be a web developer.

Both DC’s ArcGIS.com and OpenData websites were highlighted at this year’s Esri User Conference Plenary Session in San Diego, CA as successful examples of how powerful these tools are , most importantly is easy to use. The conference is attended by more than 15,000 professionals from nearly every commercial sector, government organization, and non-profit fields. It is truly exciting what DC government has to offer in terms of geospatial online web mapping and data access.
