I a new era
Located in the admission free“ root” of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, with direct access to the Forks, new restaurant Era Bistro is helmed by executive chef Barry Saunders, formerly of Inn at the Forks. A beautiful open-concept room features wooden communal tables, warm natural elements, and a colourful“ Planet Earth” ceiling feature, and serves regional and Fair Trade ingredients in contemporary applications. Reservations recommended for dinner. Canadian Museum of Human Rights, 85 Israel Asper Way, 204‐289‐2000.— JK
I crafted cuisine
Chef Alex Svenne( formerly of Bistro 7 1 / 4) took up the mantle at Inn at the Forks last month in newly opened Smith Restaurant. Touches of rustic Canadiana— such as lounge banquettes upholstered with Hudson Bay stripes and mason jar votives— complement the menu of simple, elegant regional cuisine. Snacks like lightly battered fried olives stuffed with a morsel of sausage show off artistry down to the last detail, while craft cocktails from the bar reveal house made syrups and infusions. 75 Forks Market Rd, 204‐944‐2445.— JK
I in bloom
Cut down from its North
Main location over a year ago, The Tallest Poppy is sprouting up again. Housed in the Sherbrook Inn, the popular spot joins the likes of Stella’ s, Boon Burger, and Thom Bargen in revitalizing the street’ s food scene. The 92-seat restaurant will carry some familiar favourites, with an expanded menu that includes dinner. Sherbrook Inn, 685 Westminister Ave.— JK
I leave a mark
Osborne Village welcomes another place to sate caffeine cravings, Stain Coffee( above left). A deceptively narrow storefront opens into a large space accented with pop art-inspired touches, a vibrantly-decorated chalkboard wall, piles of magazines, and bright red chairs. A menu of sandwiches and snacks tempts with feelgood ingredients, like the kale salad with crumbled rice cake and lemon-tahini dressing, and juice in fresh new combinations, like watermelon and garam masala. Fair trade, locally roasted coffee drinks ring up at habit-enabling prices. 4-433 River Ave, 204‐475‐0625.— JK

I reno refresh
The Fairmont hotel has a chic new look, with the paint freshly dried on recent renovations to the guest rooms, main lobby, and dining areas. The hotel’ s premium dining option, The Velvet Glove( above right), is also fitted with modern new digs, reflected in a brand new menu. Taking the reigns in the kitchen is newcomer to the Winnipeg dining scene, Eraj Jayawickreme, who is whipping up delights such as an inventive pork trio: ash rolled pork loin, cheek croquette, and crispy ear, served with charred zucchini, salt-baked turnips, yogurt onion soubise, pear and sweet herb salad, and pork neck rhubarb jus. 2 Lombard Pl, 204‐985‐6204— JK
