TRINIDAD EXPRESS NEWSPAPERS | INDIVIDUAL OF THE YEAR On the 8th February 2019, at the Radisson Hotel, the Trinidad Express Newspapers celebrated 40 years of recognizing esteemed individuals who made a significant contribution toward national and community life. Under the celebration, past recipients were invited and recognized for their service. Some of the specially invited guests were, Zalayhar Hassanali, Rhonda Maingot, Wendy Fitzwilliam, Diana Mahabir-Wyatt, The Just Because Foundation – Noel and Chevaughn Joseph 2018 Individual of the Year - Kalpoo Brothers The Kalpoo brothers, Navin and Ravi,  became local heroes following last October’s unprecedented flooding in Central Trinidad, rushing out to help rescue over 300 people in distress  in Kelly Village. This instinct to serve those in need was born through their mother, Doolarie Kalpoo, who was known for her tireless community work. When she lost her battle to cancer, the brothers  continued their humanitarian work, always lending a hand where needed with no expectation to be rewarded with fame or fortune. At the award ceremony, the Kalpoo brothers shared that it was one year their mother passed and they were privileged to receive the award. 2018 Youth of the Year - Nicholas Paul, Cyclist For this 20-year old, 2018 is a year worth remembering. Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Nicholas Paul won the heart of the Trinidad and Tobago’s public when his speed on the track earned him a new PAN AM record, just short of a world record. He won three gold medals at the CAC Games in the individual sprint, team sprint and 1k time trial and ran away with TV6 Viewer’s Choice Sports Personality and Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee People’s Choice Award in 2018. 2018 Community Group of the Year - The Living Water Community The Living Water Community has been supporting thousands of needy persons since 1975 and continues to do so with an abundance of generosity from citizens. Today they continue to extend a helping hand to families seeking refuge in Trinidad after fleeing lives of turmoil in their homeland. During the 2018 Christmas season, the group provided over 1,500 hampers to asylum seekers and needy families and on Christmas Day, shared 2,500 meals to the less fortunate. The Living Water Community also continues to feed some 800 families nationwide every month and does much more without fanfare. JANUARY TO MARCH 2019 | PAGE 3
