Harold Hoyte, Founder, Editor Emeritus and Former Chairman, the Nation Kimiko Scott, recipient of the Harold Hoyte (Masters in Journalism) Scholarship, had this to say upon hearing the news of his passing. “When I was preparing for the interview for the OCM Scholarship, I learned about Mr. Hoyte’s pioneering journey in building The Nation Newspaper in Barbados and also read his weekly column entitled “Men and Mice” which Harold Hoyte accepting his honourary doctorate from Chancellor Emeritus, The University of the West Indies, Sir George Alleyne, in October 2005 challenged regional leaders such as Dr. Eric Williams, Mr. Norman Manley, Mr. Errol Barrow and others who all grew to respect his journalism. This impressed upon me the importance of the scholarship in his honor” “I also learned that he worked tirelessly to uphold journalistic principles of truth, accuracy, accountability, independence and transparency. He set himself apart as a true Caribbean gentleman, known for his humility and generous nature. It was a joy to learn what I could about him and this enhanced my feelings of pride at being ultimately awarded the honor. Although we never met, I felt that he was a visionary whose life could present a model on how to build a lasting legacy. Condolences to his family, children, colleagues and friends. May his vision live on.” Before his passing, the Nation Group renamed their office, that houses the Nation Publishing, to the Harold Hoyte & Fred Gollop Media Complex. The service was held at the Wildey Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex and was attended by Governor General Dame Sandra Mason, Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Members of the Cabinet, dignitaries, Directors of the OCM and Nation Publishing Boards, past and present employees of The Nation, and members of the public. OCM extends our deepest condolences to his spouse Mrs. Noreen Hoyte, his children Tracy and Bobby, and all his colleagues and friends on his passing. He will be sorely missed by all of us at the OCM Group. May his soul rest in eternal peace. APRIL TO JUNE 2019 | PAGE 3
