The impact Ocean Youth Trust Scotland's adventure under sail

After the voyage, respondents (n=44) were asked to what extent sailing with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland has helped them achieve identified outcomes; such as their physical, social and mental well being. Each outcome was rated from 1 (not helped at all) to 5 (helped a lot).

The results show that the week's voyage has had the greatest impact on 'trying new things' with the majority (91%) rating this at level 4 or 5 after the voyage.

Linked to trying new things, comes the ability to acquire new skills which was rated at 4 or 5 by most (89%) participants.

Also rated highly by the majority of participants is 'getting respite from your caring responsibilities' which shows a shift in opinion, where after experiencing a period of respite it is rated more highly.

Most (81%) participants attributed a rating of 4 or 5 to 'growing in confidence' and 'meeting with other young carers.'

Three quarters (75) were helped by 'gaining new qualifications' where completing the voyage and tasks gives young people the skills and knowledge to achieve Royal Yachting Association 'Start Yachting' Certificate.

More than two thirds (70%) gave positive ratings of 4 or 5 for improving their social and mental wellbeing. Despite the obvious strength and physical demands of sailing 'improving your phsyical wellbeing' had the lowest proportion of 4 or 5 ratings (52%).

More than half (59%) of participants felt that the voyage helped with 'exploring volunteering opportunities'. A similar proportion (57%) rated 'being a better carer' at level 4 or 5.

Consequently the voyage has made a significant impact on participants across all intended outcomes.
