Ocean Dead Zones may 2015 | Page 6

How do we fix it?

Stop Synthetic Fertilizers

This is the number one cause of dead zones. Major crops are coated with them to increase the amount of food that can be produced. These synthetic fertilizers consist of tons of nitrogen and phosphorus which then gets added to the run off and eventually carried out to sea where it can cause an algal bloom.

Another growing cause of dead zones is poor regulation of developing countries' industry and sewage. At the peak in 1980, 18 million tons of sewage was dumped into the ocean (National Geo.). Sewage contains lots of Nitrogen and Phosphorus. By reducing this we can stop creating dead zones.
