THE EFFECTS OF OCEAN DEAD ZONES

The ocean's biodiversity has been greatly affected by the dead zones in our ocean. A dead zone has many negative effects. The first is a big loss of habitat for organisms living in the hypoxic area. If the dead zone is large enough, then the organisms that are forced to move out of their homes and find a new habitat. Some of the organisms can't survive in a change of habitat, therefore they die. This leads to a big break in the food chains. If the producers are killed off than the primary consumers aren't able to survive without food, thus creating a domino effect of death.

Another major problem associated with dead zones is the loss of income to the industries dependent on the ecosystem. Fishing and crabbing industries suffer greatly when the coastal waters are hypoxic. Many coastal, recreational areas are said to be unsafe when the water is hypoxic, which can also hurt a tourism-based economy.
