Ocean Acidification Jun. 2014 | Page 7

Coral reefs are an extremely valuable part of the planet. They protect shorelines from erosion, provide a habitat for fish who could be the main source of protein for many people, and sequester carbon. 13 As seen in the picture on the right, after 34 years of continuous input of CO2 into the air, and unacknowledged hazardous behavior, the coral reefs are almost gone. Even in five years, an entire area in shallow waters of coral can be destroyed from the acidifying ocean. Coral reefs have so many benefits to us and the ocean, that without them, the planet and humans will not be able to survive for much longer. We need to solve this issue as soon as possible to save the planet, and show our respect. 13
