General Accessibility Recommendations

The following accessibility recommendations are generalized for all types of risings . In addition to reading this section , you should review the ‘ Accessibility Recommendations for Specific Art Modalities ( Creative Rising tools )’ section , which provides further accessibility information for different creative modalities .
Plan ahead
You should prioritize accessibility and inclusion at the beginning of your planning process . If accessibility is an afterthought , it will be difficult to fully integrate inclusive practices into your rising .
Key Planning Components
COVID-19 Precautions : Prioritize safety with masks , testing , air purifiers , and distancing where possible . More details below .
Involving Disabled People : Actively
include disabled and neurodivergent individuals in planning . Share accessible information online and in person .
Access Needs : Provide opportunities
( via surveys or direct communication ) for participants to share their access needs . Address these needs as early as possible .
Inclusive Intentions : Commit as a group to accessibility and inclusion Regularly evaluate barriers and solutions at each planning stage .
Funding : Allocate money for accessibility costs ( e . g ., ASL interpreters , CART services , audio describers ). Consider fundraising or reaching out to disabled communities and organizations for support .
Event Structure : Limit the event to 2 hours with breaks . Include breaks every hour ( minimum 10 minutes ). Adjust break durations based on physical or cognitive activity demands .
Hybrid Participation : Facilitate virtual attendance ( live stream or record the event ). Create online options for full participation .
