Overview of Disability Justice

Disability justice ( DJ ) is both a movement and a framework . It was created in 2005 by a collective of queer and BIPOC disabled folks - many of whom have been involved in the disability arts organization Sins Invalid . DJ is dedicated to creating a less ableist and more equitable world , similar to the disability rights movement . However , DJ differentiates itself from disability rights by going beyond a government framework , and by centering disabled folks who are often left out of mainstream disability rights . DJ is anti-capitalist , intersectional ( specifically centering disabled BIPOC and LGBTQ +), and focuses on all types of disabilities .
These are the 10 principles of disability justice :

This guide will focus on principle # 9 : collective access :
“ As brown , black and queer-bodied disabled people we bring flexibility and creative nuance that go beyond able-bodied / minded normativity , to be in community with each other .”
Accessibility is our collective responsibility . You do not have to be brown , Black , queer , or disabled to implement accessibility practices .
