The Young Died Glorious Ekphrastic Poem inspired by The Dying Gaul ( c . 220 B . C . E .)
The vanquished man Rests on the ground , His sword bent and broken , His trumpet forsaken , The wound profound and fatal , The blood hot and fresh . Triumph , not virtue , is favored by destiny .
The trumpet of battle , erstwhile filled With the proud breath of the trumpeter , Now lies empty of the song of vict ’ ry . With the sadness of such tragedy , The anger of such defeat , The pain of such wounds , It writes a new song —
Not the song earlier sung of vict ’ ry , The one around the fire , But the song of labor For many years , The song of defeat .
