Genetically modified organisms , otherwise known as GMOs , are one of the most controversial areas of science . Although they are generally accepted for medical applications such as synthetic insulin , some people get oddly leary of them when it comes to their food . Humans have been domesticating and making hybrid foods and animals for thousands of years . But GMOs are a recent discovery , first made in 1973 , when two biochemists moved DNA from one bacterium into another . Over the next 50 years , their abundance and their potential to fix some of humanity ’ s biggest problems has grown , even though ill-considered consumer suspicion of them has risen too . In light of their benefits , U . S . consumers must buy GMO foods to alleviate world hunger , enhance our nutrition , and sustain the environment .
Because genetically modified crops are significantly less expensive than cultivating organic crops , GMOs widen the spectrum of people who can afford basic food . As reported by Scientific American , non-GMO products tend to be 31 % more expensive than GMO products . Over 800 million people in the world are unable to sufficiently feed themselves and need more affordable food options . Rapid climate change , dynamic economics , and political conflicts over land and resources have restricted global food supplies in some regions , driving up prices , which presents a threat to developing countries .
