How Can We Find Planets with Breathable Atmospheres ?

Everyone take a deep breath . Inhale , exhale . Every day , on average we take about 20,000 breaths , something that we take for granted . We can ’ t really see the air around us , but if you take a moment to just look up , you can observe the wonder and beauty of our atmosphere , and what it does for us every day . You just have to look up . Hi , my name is Vikas Schultz , and this is my partner Victor Iosilevich . Victor and I first met each other in 2004 , on the International Space Station , or ISS . While there , Victor and I loved to sit and watch the Earth below us , especially the beautiful blue tones of our atmosphere . It led us to devote our lives to looking for other breathable atmospheres in our solar system and beyond . However , after over 40 years of flying in and out of our atmosphere together , this will unfortunately be our last , so we wanted to do it together . So buckle up , as we answer the question “ How can we find planets with a breathable atmosphere ?” and show you what we ’ ve learned on our countless trips .
As we start our adventure to some of our favorite places , let ’ s discuss the basic knowledge about what an atmosphere is . Let ’ s start at our beloved home , the Earth . The Earth has about eight billion people now , but without our atmosphere , there would be zero . What is an atmosphere ? An atmosphere is an outer layer of gas that ’ s stuck to a planet by gravity .
