The young man and his wife were so distraught that they barely ever left the house , always hoping their baby would return .” He paused to dab a handkerchief across his forehead . “ About a decade later on Halloween Eve ,” he continued , “ the couple also disappeared without a trace . The police and the town were baffled and frightened at the same time . How could a whole family vanish ?” “ The police must have a theory !” I retorted . “ Many believe the house is cursed . It has been vacant since . But townspeople have reported strange noises echoing from the house every Halloween night .”
I listened intently as he spoke . He then wished me luck with the house . I thanked him for his time but believed his story was more myth than reality .
The torrential rain pelted the windows and roof of the house . Lightning struck loudly and lit up the sky . I felt safe at home , but I still wondered if the roof was sturdy enough to keep out the rain . “ A typical October night in the woods ” I muttered . The lights flickered . After a long day of work at the farm , I prepared for bed . The lights flickered again . “ Ugh , not another power outage ,” I said to myself . While climbing into bed , the lights shut off for a moment as thunder rumbled through the sky . Then they returned to bright yellow .
“ Never is there peace and quiet for just one night ,” I grumbled . However , this storm grew worse than any other night . The lights flickered again . Grabbing a flashlight , I fumbled my way down to inspect the circuit breakers . As I opened the rusty powerbox , the cold metal shocked my fingertips and sent a shiver between my shoulders . I sensed I was not alone . I quickly turn my head to see only my reflection in the window .
