During high school , Rogers was bullied by popular kids because of his lack of confidence and his timid nature . Jim was one of the popular kids because of his athleticism . Unfortunately , Jim was injured in a game and had to stay in the hospital . Rogers was ordered to bring Jim his assignments , but he also talked to him and brought him kindness . Jim appreciated what Rogers did and told the other kids at school that he was a good guy , which boosted his pride in himself ( Warner 12 ). After high school , Rogers studied romance languages at Dartmouth College but transferred out after freshman year to pursue a degree in music at Rollins College (“ Fred Rogers ” Britannica ). Additionally , he went on to earn a master ’ s degree in divinity from the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1962 and took graduate courses in child development at the University of Pittsburgh (“ Fred Rogers ,” Biography Today ).
Because he was driven to share kindness with others , Fred Rogers worked hard to create a show about the power of caring , which would change children ’ s programming forever . Rogers ’ first encounter with television was at his family ’ s house during spring break in his last semester at Rollins . After seeing what TV could do , he realized that it could be used as “ an extraordinary tool for education and enrichment ” (“ Fred Rogers ,” Biography Today ). This realization prompted him to pursue a career in television for the betterment of people despite more stable and higher-paying jobs being available . (“ Fred Rogers ,” PBS ). One of his first jobs was at WQED , a broadcasting station in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . He co-produced The Children ’ s Corner , a program for kids , with a woman named Josie Carey . Rogers was the show ’ s puppeteer and played and composed songs while Josie acted and sang . He used puppets to stimulate children ’ s imaginations , a choice that would follow him to the
