Later , step ashore in Pula for a tour of the 2,000 year-old Roman Amphitheatre . One of the best preserved in the world , it features a subterranean hall that housed the animals and gladiators who competed in the savage games here .

DAY 7 • Rovinj • Home-Hosted Lunch • Bale village and olive oil tasting This morning , uncover the timeless appeal of the seaside resort town of Rovinj during a walking tour . Then , depart for the home of a Croatian family where you ’ ll enjoy a Home-Hosted Lunch . This afternoon , visit an award-winning olive oil mill in Bale , where you ’ ll learn about the process of making and purifying olive oil and have the chance to sample their products .

DAY 8 • Rovinj • A Day in the Life of a woman-owned Croatian farm Today features A Day in the Life of a rural Croatian farm . We will visit one of two women entrepreneurs who will show us around their farm , teach us some traditional recipes , and share how they are helping to shape their communities through workshops geared toward passing along their history , traditions , and knowledge .

DAY 9 • Sistiana , Italy • Aquileia • Trieste Disembark in Sistiana , and travel inland to visit Aquileia , an ancient Roman river port . Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site on an included

tour , and discover the mosaics within its eleventhcentury basilica . Return to your ship for lunch and begin a scenic cruising to Trieste where you will moor for two nights .

DAY 10 • Trieste • Controversial Topic : The Foibe Massacre • Risiera di San Sabba Begin with a sobering look into Trieste ’ s World War II history during a visit to Risiera di San Sabba , the rice factory-turned-concentration camp , followed by a walking tour of the city . Then , learn about the Controversial Topic of the complex cultural identity of Trieste and how the tension between Italy , Slovenia , and Croatia was further inflamed after the Foibe Massacre of 1943 . We ’ ll speak with a Trieste native and a journalist about this eye-opening topic .

DAY 11 • Trieste • Redipuglia World War I Memorial • Winery visit First , visit the monumental Redipuglia World War I Memorial built into the Sei Busi mountainside , honoring the 110,000 soldiers who fell in battle near here . Later , follow the Strada del Vino ( Wine Road ) that runs through the undulating hills of the Collio region . Visit a small , family owned vineyard for a tour , tasting , and light lunch . After enjoying a Captain ’ s Farewell dinner onboard , we ’ ll sail to Venice .
