DAY 10 • Bukhara • A Day in the Life of Nayman village • Community lunch Spend A Day in the Life of Nayman , a farming village outside Bukhara . We ’ ll try our hand at making Samarkand bread , and join local families for lunch .

DAY 11 • Bukhara • Overland to Khiva Experience the Silk Road the way centuries of merchants did , traveling across the Kyzylkum Desert on our way to Khiva . We ’ ll stop for a picnicstyle lunch at a local tea house .

DAY 12 • Walking tour of Khiva ’ s Old Town Tour Khiva ’ s Old Town , a UNESCO World Heritage Site . We ’ ll visit Tash Hauli Palace , the rebuilt 9th-century Dzhuma Mosque , and the original residence of the khans , Kunya Ark .

DAY 13 • Khiva • Controversial Topic : Evolving gender roles in Uzbekistan Learn about a Controversial Topic when we meet a feminist activist for a conversation about how
women ’ s rights in Uzbekistan have evolved since the end of Soviet rule . This afternoon , we ’ ll travel overland to Nukus , capital of the autonomous Karakalpakstan Republic .

DAY 14 • Nukus • Visit Savitsky Museum • Dinner with a Karakalpak family Visit the Savitsky Museum , also known as the State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan . The museum represents the life work of Russian painter Igor Savitsky , which he kept hidden from the KGB in this remote desert location . Later , we ’ ll visit a private home to share dinner with a Karakalpak family and hear a performance by a traditional Karakalpak throat singer .

DAY 15 • Ashgabat , Turkmenistan Cross the border into Turkmenistan and drive to the oasis town of Dasoguz , a prominent stop along the Silk Road because of its underground spring . After lunch at a local restaurant in Dasoguz , we ’ ll fly to Ashgabat .

DAY 16 • Anau • Akhal-Teke horse farm • Russian Market Discover Anau , a city that has been inhabited since Neolithic times . Then , we ’ ll visit an Akhal-Teke horse farm to view one of the beautiful stallions that are considered the pride of Turkmenistan . Tonight ’ s Farewell Dinner features a traditional music and dance performance .

DAY 17 • Nisa • Ashgabat This morning , we ’ ll visit Nisa , the ancient capital of the Parthian Empire and a UNESCO World Heritage
