SPRING LAKE

5 Beds | 2 / 1 Baths $ 2,999,000 312Monmouth . com
312 Monmouth Ave brings a touch of Paris France to Spring Lake . In 1890 , Charles H . Freeman , contracted to have the home built as a summer residence .. Mr . Freeman was a Jersey Shore Impressionist artist who had studied in both Italynd France and has a work that is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art . James McNeil Whistler and Frank Duveneck are counted among his mentors . own lore is that the large room at 312 Monmouth was originally a “ ballroom ,” butit would seem more likely that this 20 ’ tall room with a large skylight was built to be Mr . Freeman ’ s art studio . Having studied at the Acade ’ mie Julian in Paris , France , the room mimics the style of the atelier where the skylight allowed for natural light and the walls were used to hang artwork . Mr . Freeman occupied the home until 1916 , when the Mayor of Spring Lake , Oliver H . Brown , purchased it . Mr Brown was a very prominent businessman and financier at the time and owned several properties in Spring Lake . He is credited with gifting to the town the land and finances needed to build the SL Community House which still stands at the corners of Madison , Brighton and Third Aves . After Mr . Brown ’ s death in 1925 , the house was purchased by Mr . Martin Maloney in one of the largest land deals in the history of the town at the time . Mr . Maloney paid $ 225,000 for nine properties that had been owned by Mr . Brown . Mr . Maloney , also a prominent businessman , was responsible for the building of St . Catharine ’ s church which he dedicated to the memory of his daughter .
In it ’ s 130 year history , this summer residence at 312 Monmouth has had only 7 owners . In 2017 , the southeast corner of the home was lifted and repaired . In 2018 , the home went through a major renovation . The large skylight in the studio was replaced with a commercial grade aluminum skylight and all of the windows were replaced . The studio was opened to the back of the home and a French door was installed to the yard , providing views of the yard from the foyer , studio , and dining room . Cedar shakes were replaced on the West and North sides of the home . The kitchen was gutted and renovated . A new gas fireplace was installed in the studio . In 2020 , in what was one of the largest improvements to the home , the floors were removed and the floor joists were repaired or replaced as needed and new hickory floors were installed .
Lovingly cared for and now having gone through a major renovation , this home is updated for today ’ s living and will stand as a testament to it ’ sowners ’ care for along time .
