When We Tied
THE KNOT
A wise woman once declared , “ If you liked it , then you should have put a ring on it .” Join us as we open up the family photo albums to reminisce about when some FNQ locals did exactly that .
BOB AND CLAIRE MANNING Married at St Johns Anglican Church , Cairns on 20 / 09 / 1969
“ Claire and I met in 1963 , and I proposed to her in the middle of the dance floor at the Rugby League Ball in Townsville in 1969 .”
Memorable moment Bob ’ s brother George was in hospital , and couldn ’ t attend the wedding . So , we ( the wedding party ) visited him at the Calvary Hospital . Two nuns ( Sisters of Mercy ) decided we should have a celebratory drink , and presented stubbies of room temperature beer with some glasses on a tray with ice . We celebrated with hot beer on ice !
KEVIN AND REBECCA CONLAN Backyard wedding on 10 / 10 / 2014
“ We got together after meeting at the Mann Street Touch Footy fields . In 2003 , Kevin placed a cryptic word and number puzzle in the newspaper . 11 years and two sons later , we finally got married .”
Memorable moment : Unbeknown to me , my father was taken to hospital that morning with a suspected heart attack . He managed to get himself released just before the ceremony . Oh , and Kevin also decided to have his bucks party on the day of the wedding . What could possibly go wrong !
FLEUR AND DAVE WARNER Married at Angsana Resort Chapel Palm Cove on 18 / 10 / 2003
“ We met at the Town Hall Hotel in Bank St , South Melbourne on October 18th , 1996 . Dave proposed under a palm tree at Palm Cove . He had the ring box tucked into his sarong in preparation . I still can ’ t believe I didn ’ t see it ! We were married on the same day a year later .”
Memorable moment : We had traditional Torres Strait islanders drumming and singing in place of the traditional ‘ here comes the bride ’ which gave the ceremony a beautiful tribal feeling . And the ‘ Best Man ’ s speech went for over 30 minutes !
