Long held family secrets are revealed through KickArts Contemporary Arts latest Gallery One exhibition Secret Recipes . Highlighting the traditions and culture of the Cairns Chinese Community , Secret
Recipes provides insight into the treasured family recipes of members of the Cairns and District Chinese Association Incorporated ( CADCAI ). Renowned photographer Glen O ’ Malley and ethnographic videographer Daniela Vavrova have captured the stories of this community as they prepare symbolic culinary delights to celebrate Chinese New Year . The inevitable adaptation , cross-pollination , and refinement of these dishes , speaks to the journey ’ s these recipes have made to become an integral part of family , friendship , and community in contemporary Australian society .
Secret Recipes is on display at KickArts Contemporary Arts Gallery One from the 10th of February to the 21st of April 2018 . The official opening will take place on Saturday the 17th of February 2018 , 3-5pm , and will feature a performance by the CADCAI Lion Dancers to welcome in Chinese New Year !

MEET FAR NORTH QUEENSLAND PHOTOGRAPHER GLEN O ’ MALLEY !
Glen O ’ Malley is a senior artist who has lived and worked in Far North Queensland for over 30 years .
With a career spanning over 40 solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally ; Glen is renowned for his photographic work that incorporates a surreal edge into the banal everyday . Glen ’ s passion for cooking , Chinese cuisine and the documentation of Far North Queensland interiors , is combined in his latest body of work commissioned for the exhibition Secret Recipes .
Glen ’ s work is featured in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia , Canberra ; Parliament House , Canberra ; Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art , Brisbane ; State Library of Queensland , Brisbane ; University of Queensland , Brisbane ; and Queensland University of Technology , Brisbane .
