Placement - it really is an art form all
to itself. It is the one key factor that
can make a space come together
seamlessly … or make it a complete
disaster.
For instance, if a painting or mirror is
a mere few centimetres too high, too
low, or not centred correctly, it can
completely throw a room of balance.
I have never been one for following
trends, as I believe that style is
undefined and immeasurable, and
a beautifully decorated room never
dates. Placement plays a major role

In the words of John Maeda, the
American designer and technologist,
“Simplicity is about subtracting the
obvious and adding the meaningful”.
This plays in my head every time I
come across a room that is cluttered

Meaningful’ is a great way to describe
those treasures that we collect,
that hold special memories - like a
reminder of a fabulous holiday or a
certain person, or perhaps a family
heirloom. In reality, it can work, but may just
need some consideration regarding
its placement.
These meaningful pieces add an
element of design that you simply
can’t buy.
Too often, I am amazed when a client
tells me that a meaningful item will
need to be packed away as it just
doesn’t work in a new house or newly
