“We Are Family”: Sister Sledge
Families, hey!? What would we do without them?
A constant source of love, support, frustration,
entertainment, and, often, embarrassment. Especially
that time in 1986 when your mum picked you up from
the Blue Light Disco wearing a polyester nightie. Like,
actually walked inside to collect you!
Families are generally an absurdly eclectic mix of
conservative, liberal, wacky, average, frugal, generous,
outrageous and passive folk who, except for genetics,
would probably never choose to know one another. What
binds us, however, are the experiences we share.
In this issue, we are celebrating families - including
paying tribute to our gorgeous Dad’s on Fathers Day.
We have a chat with local business leader and
humanitarian, Joe Vella, about his work with the Make A
Wish Foundation.
And we’re off to work with Lesley Van Staveren, of FNQ
Plastics, as they prepare to revolutionise the Cairns
recycling market.
The subject of our cover story is Chris Durie, building
designer, devoted husband and father-of-five, who is
working to design smarter buildings for our climate.
We also catch up with Chris Wiles about his fundraising
efforts for Muscular Dystrophy, and local lad, Allan
Hardy, who has gone next level with extreme adventure.
Oasis Magazine is delighted to be supporting The
Cairns Tropical Writers Festival on 12-14 August; The
Ukelele Festival, The Ride for Muscular Dystrophy on
August 28th, as well as The Power Of Pallets Charity
Auction on October 29th. There’s plenty going on in our
gorgeous city over the next few months. I encourage you
to embrace it - all of it - and savour all the beauty this
gorgeous town offers up.
And I couldn’t sign off without giving
a shout out to Oasis Mag’s inaugural
work experience supremo. Isabella,
from St Monica’s joined us in July,
and what a gem she is! The future’s
looking secure with this calibre of
person entering the workforce.
