March/April Features and Advertisers
Dear Readers,
I’m very excited to announce that Oaklee’s Family Guide
was purchased by Paddock Publications, publishers of the
Daily Herald. The Daily Herald is Chicago’s pre-eminent
suburban newspaper and excels in delivering relevant and
timely news to local communities. It’s a great fit with Oaklee’s history of serving suburban families.
With the Daily Herald Media Group‘s publishing expertise and resources, we will be
bringing back a bi-monthly print edition. We’ll continue to focus on events to let you
know what’s happening in the area. You’ll also be seeing more family content on our
website, www.oakleesguide.com. Look for your May/June issue in the Daily Herald or
find it at your local library or park district in early May.
For this issue, we’ve got plenty of ideas for creating new memories with your children. March 2 is the birthday of Dr. Seuss. You can celebrate “The Cat in The Hat”
and more of Dr. Seuss’ wacky and wonderful books by participating in Read Across
America events that week. Check our March calendar starting on page 6 to find a
story time near you.
When you’re ready to head outdoors, March is maple sugaring time. Many forest
preserves have events that show you how they tap trees, collect the sap and boil it
down to create this yummy sweetener.
Easter Sunday is March 27 this year, and we have a huge list of events on pages 50-58
to help you celebrate. Have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny at a breakfast or
the local mall, ride a Bunny Train, hunt eggs in the dark or swim with the bunny.
You can also practice the strategy of “out with the old, in with the new”– or in this
case, “in with the gently used.” See the Spring Resale events found on pages 59-61.
These events are always looking for volunteers, which is a great way to get rid of
too small clothing and buy new-to-you items at bargain prices. It’s spring cleaning
at its best.
Our April calendar on pages 36-49 has many events celebrating Earth Day on April 22.
There are plenty of opportunities for your family to plant a tree, learn about recycling
and help clean up the parks.
Don’t forget that now’s the time to sign up for summer camps. See our section on
pages 31-35 to find ideas for unique and fun summer camps in your area.
In the meantime, look for more coupons, events and activities on our website and
Facebook page and be sure to sign up for our emails at www.oakleesguide.com.
Happy Spring!
