District Highlight: Sturgeon Bay
Providing clinical care across
the lifespan in Door County.
It isn’t just the quaint coastal
communities, museum-quality art
galleries, and scenic state parks
that make Door County one of
the Midwest’s most desirable
destinations. It’s the thriving
community life and local culture.
The Sturgeon Bay campus of NWTC
serves this vibrant rural community,
providing high-tech education and
training close to home. While there
are often challenges to offering
service-learning opportunities
in rural communities, NWTC
Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)
and Practical Nursing (PN) faculty
have established ongoing service-
learning relationships that have
29
connected the campus with the
community for nearly a decade.
The first partnership was
established with Sunset School
in Sturgeon Bay, where students
would apply fluoride varnishes to
the teeth of over 70 children in
Head Start to K4 on a semi-
annual basis.
Marcia Osborne, ADN/PN faculty
member explains, “Fluoride
varnishing is working with
children, which is so different
than all other clinicals. The
students teach them, talk with
them and learn how to make them
feel comfortable.”
