Golfers went for the green in more ways than one on August 10th at Ledgeview Golf Course, hitting the links to raise funds for veteran scholarships during the 5th Annual SVA Scholarship Scramble. This event is coordinated each year by members of the Student Veterans Association (SVA) in partnership with the NWTC Veterans Resource Center. Military veterans often struggle to find high-paying civilian careers once leaving active duty. While the unemployment rate among military veterans stood at a near-record low of 3 percent as of July 2018, a November 2017 survey by the nonprofit Call of Duty Endowment found that approximately one in three veterans reported they are “underemployed,” or working at a job below their skill level. To help address this issue, the GI Bill provides robust benefits that mitigate much of the expenses connected with earning a certificate or degree. However, many student veterans still complete college with student loans that may negatively impact their ability to save or invest in their future. That’s where the SVA General Scholarship Fund steps in. The SVA General Scholarship Fund assists student veterans with books, technological needs, and tools required to aid in their academic success while at the College. This event, along with multiple other efforts provide current and future student veterans with the support needed to succeed in college. The NWTC SVA’s mission is to provide military veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and following graduation. During the 2018 SVA Scholarship Scramble, SVA students were able to raise over $9,000 for veteran’s scholarships. The students also coordinated raffles and silent auction prizes/ baskets sponsored by various NWTC departments, individuals, corporations and small businesses looking to get involved. By engaging with those in my community I have gained social awareness of the needs in my community and the ways that I can help. - Participant Voice 13
