Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Collaborating across institutions to
celebrate diversity and community.
Hundreds of Brown County
residents shared a vision for peace
Saturday, Jan. 13th during the 23rd
Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Community Celebration.
The event honors the life and
legacy of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., celebrates diversity,
and reflects on the collective
responsibility to work towards a
more equitable society.
Held at Northeast Wisconsin
Technical College and presented
in conjunction with University of
Wisconsin-Green Bay, St. Norbert
College, Green Bay Area Public
Schools, and other community
partners the annual celebration
9
featured music, reflections,
and tributes to the great Civil
Rights leader.
Students in grades K-12 offered
their interpretation of Dr. King’s
dream through a poster and essay
contest reflecting on “The Time
Is Always Right to Do What Is
Right: iRespect the Dream”, the
celebration theme. The winners
were announced and recognized
during the celebration.
During the event, American Indian
drummers and singers performed
on the main stage from the Oneida
Nation Arts Program, followed by
multiple live performances from
local dancers and musicians.
Community members also had the
opportunity to enjoy free delicious
multicultural cuisine and hear the
inspiring words of Dr. King.
The annual MLK Day Celebration
is just one example of institutions
in the greater Green Bay
area coming together and
demonstrating how to work
together to achieve lasting and
scalable solutions.
It is this recognition that higher
education can better achieve
the mission of helping students
and surrounding communities by
working cooperatively, rather than
separately, that provides a lasting
impact for generations.
