A thousand-degree secret
The burning hot glass oven glows with orange heat . The temperature of the melted glass in the oven is at least a thousand degrees Celsius when the glassblower starts to work . The glassblower ’ s tools are nearly the same today as over 200 years ago when glassblowing started in Nuutajärvi : a hollow metallic blowpipe , various shears , moulds and files . The blowers usually work in small groups where each has his or her own task . The old tradition was that the craft was only taught to one ’ s sons or close relatives . The skills were systematically concealed from others , and the blower could lock his personal tools in a cupboard at the end of the day .
