In the embrace of nature

The village is located between two lakes , Rutajärvi and Nuutajärvi . There is proof of settlements on these rugged hills dating from at least the Iron Age . Significant archaeological finds include a crossbow fibula from the 6th century , found in Niemumäki on Nuutajärvi . This fibula inspired Kalevala Jewelry to design one of its popular classic pieces of jewellery . For centuries , people in the area have lived off nature – from waters , forests and cornfields . Nature has also been a source of safety , such as the tall Linnavuori hill , which had an important role in defence . As story-telling and gathering places , people selected sheltered natural places such as Paratiisi and Linnunhauta on the banks of the Nuutajoki river .
