Edna Park Lecture By:: Joanne Brathwaite
This year ' s Professor Edna W. Park Lecture took place on November 19 th, 2015. Dr. Lawrence L. Spriet, Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph, was this year ' s Edna Park Lecturer. Dr. Spriet earned his PhD in Medical Science at McMaster University and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. His lecture, entitled“ Sports Nutrition Today: Hydrating and Fueling Your Athletes for Success,” discussed his research into the effects of mild dehydration on the performance of serious athletes, and the challenges athletes face in maintaining adequate levels of hydration. Dr. Spriet’ s lecture was captivating and informative, and it ended with a lively Q and A session that spilled from the lecture hall out to the reception area afterwards. Congratulations and thank you, Dr. Spriet!

Mentorship Program Holiday Party
By:: Stephanie Nishi
On Tuesday, December 1 st, 2015, DNSAA Mentors and Mentees gathered to celebrate the holiday season at the third annual DNS Mentorship Program’ s Holiday Dinner. Held in Hart House’ s North Dining Room, the Holiday Party gave the opportunity for Alumni Mentors and Student Mentees to meet and mingle while enjoying a delicious dinner together in a social atmosphere. To help break the ice, there was a slight twist to the dinner seating arrangements, instead of staying in the same seat for the appetizer, entrée, and dessert, attendees switched places for each course in a quasi‘ musical chairs’, enabling new connections to be made at eachcourse. The Mentorship Program was initiated to provide students with the opportunity to have one-on-one interactions with established
professionals, and it has continued to grow since its inception in 2012. This year there are 29 Mentor-Mentee matches, who meet regularly on an individual basis throughout the academic year to discuss academic, career, and other life topics, in addition to gathering for special program-wide events, such as the Holiday Party. Many thanks to the DNS Alumni Association and Mentorship Program volunteers, as well as Manulife Financial for their support in making this event and program possible!
