Nursing Conference Provides Opportunity for Collaborative Professional Development Across Institutions
On May 11 , 2021 , Children ’ s Hospital Colorado , in partnership with UCHealth and the University of Colorado College of Nursing , held the first Nurses : Leading the Way conference . The conference was created , in part , in honor of the inaugural endowed lectureship of Mary Krugman , MD .
The annual conference , held during National Nurses Week , is designed to highlight a guest speaker who leads the nation in professional nursing practice and who has had a marked impact on patients , families and the profession . Its goal is to elevate professional nursing practice through evidence-based presentations , showcase best practices applicable to clinical and academic settings , and illuminate current topics important to nursing .
In 2021 , the conference speaker was Tim Porter-O ’ Grady , MD , EdD , ScD ( h ), APRN , FAAN , FACCWS . Throughout his 25-year career , he has consistently demonstrated creative and innovative models of thinking and practicing in an everevolving healthcare system . Dr . Porter-O ’ Grady has written and published books that push the boundaries of healthcare leadership , governance and system changes . Dr . Porter-O ’ Grady gave presentations on three topics : transforming nursing shared governance to nursing professional governance ; nursing professional governance in action ; and practical applications of nursing professional governance during the pandemic .
The conference program drew 1,104 total attendees from the three participating institutions . Feedback noted high levels of engagement , enjoyment and learning . Nurses found the conference particularly impactful , noting that they felt validated and experienced a sense of renewed commitment to the profession after attending the conference . The conference was also valuable to faculty members , who commented on the strong presentations and the conference ’ s overall organization .
