Advanced practice nurses
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) include
Advanced Practice Nurses (APRNs), Physician Assistants (PAs), and Anesthesiologist
Assistants (AAs). APPs are employed in a mixed model by the hospital, the University of
Colorado School of Medicine and the College of Nursing as faculty on Medical Staff. APPs
are integrated into interdisciplinary care teams across the organization and function in
diverse roles in the inpatient and ambulatory settings in almost every specialty practice at
Anschutz Campus, Colorado Springs Hospital, Network of Care, community hospitals, and
outreach clinics across the state. There are currently over 450 APPs on CHCO Medical Staff
contributing to the clinical, research, teaching, and advocacy missions of the organization.
The Children’s Colorado Neonatal Program is a team of over 100 Neonatal Nurse
Practitioners (NNPs) and growing. The team currently provides neonatal care to 12 clinical
practice sites across Colorado providing level II, III and IV NICU coverage, including high
risk deliveries. The NNPs are employed through Children’s Colorado and staff the NICU at
Anschutz Medical Campus and are contracted to community NICUs:

Our NNP program has a strong partnership with Regis University as our regional partner
for NNP education. The Children’s NNP Program provides a competitive clinical rotation
practice site and provides employment opportunities for these graduates. In July of 2019,
the team’s NNP New Graduate Fellowship Program became the first ANCC accredited NNP
Fellowship Program in the country.
Children’s Hospital Colorado also has a strong partnership with the University of Colorado
for APP education. The University of Colorado School of Medicine Child Health Associate PA
program is the only pediatric focused program nationally, with integrated clinical education
opportunities at CHCO. The College of Nursing also has numerous graduate nursing
programs with established clinical rotations at CHCO, including Family, Psych/Mental
Health, Acute and Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs. These academic
partnerships are a critical part of our strategy to prepare our APP workforce for their
professional roles at CHCO.
