STRUCTURAL EMPOWERMENT Anschutz Emergency Department is Newest ‘Lantern Award’ Recipient July 25, 2019 The Emergency Nurses Association bestows the Lantern Award annually on emergency departments across the country that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. This award is named in honor of Florence Nightingale, “The Lady with the Lamp,” who famously worked to improve patient care and safety, and innovate the field of nursing care in the 19th century, known for visiting soldiers at night with a small lantern in her hand during the Crimean War. The Anschutz Emergency Department was presented with the award for its commitment to providing exceptional patient-centered care for patients and families, as well as numerous efforts related to the well-being and resiliency of ED team members. The award serves as a visible symbol of our commitment to quality, safety and a healthy work environment. On Monday, July 22, team members from the Anschutz Emergency Department gathered to celebrate this achievement. Pat Givens, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive, congratulated the team on the award. “Together, you are the front door to our organization,” Givens said. “Like Nightingale’s lantern, shining through the dark, offering hope to those who thought they were alone, our emergency department is a beacon of comfort and safe haven for children and their families in duress.” Improvement efforts, led by the ED team, were highlighted in the submission process, including quality and safety initiatives, staff recognition and resiliency efforts, front-end improvement work and evidencebased practice work. Though the award is presented by the Emergency Nurses Association, it truly recognizes the exceptional, multidisciplinary team that works together in the ED. Congratulations to the Anschutz ED along with the team members who worked on the award submission.
