TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP PEER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM HELPS IDENTIFY AREAS OF GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY In September 2018, the Executive Nurse and Patient Care Service Directors worked to implement a peer mentoring program. Directors were paired and participated in routine, reciprocal coaching sessions. One of these peer groups was Amy Lewis, MSN, RN NEA-BC, Director of Emergency Services, and Patrick Loney, MBA, BSN, RN, Director of the Pediatric Mental Health Institute. Using the Nurse Director Mentoring Plan, Amy and Patrick met monthly from October 2018 to September 2019. Amy, being new to her role as Emergency Services Director, and Patrick (who was new to the organization) developed their peer mentor relationship on a foundation of new understanding and openness to mentoring opportunities based on their different backgrounds and expertise. Initially, Patrick and Amy discussed several topics including company culture, key contacts and wayfinding resources. As they continued to meet, they often found that they were dealing with similar situations related to their new roles, and they were able to discuss team building, leadership resources and process improvement strategies. In fact, in August 2019, Amy and Patrick cohosted a process improvement event to address patient flow between departments. Clinical team members for the Psychiatric ED and inpatient psychiatric units came together, reviewed the current state of the admission process from Psychiatric ED to admission on the inpatient psychiatric units, and identified opportunities to enhance this process. Both Amy and Patrick feel the peer mentorship program strengthened their working relationship and helped improve the teamwork between their respective departments.
