Benjamin Beckman, CAJCL Parliamentarian

Salvete Amici! My name is Benjamin Beckman, and I’m honored and super excited to serve you as this year’s Parliamentarian!

Constitutional Amendments

This year’s state convention was a total blast - another huge thanks to Menlo School for hosting! But in addition to another year of Certamen finals and That’s Entertainment, this year we confirmed two important amendments to the CAJCL constitution.

The first amendment clarified the qualifications for running for National JCL office, referencing the NJCL constitution. Further, the amendment states that all candidates for national office must first hold CAJCL office, unless granted permission otherwise by the State Chairs. This amendment inscribes de facto CAJCL policy into the document and ensures that the candidates we send to NJCL are highly qualified and prepared.

The second amendment altered the way monetary profits from conventions are split between the CAJCL treasury and any host school. Upping the treasury’s share to 50% of profits will allow the CAJCL to better support initiatives across the entire state without any detriment to the host school.

Both amendments were passed with strong support from the JCL community, and serve to better our organization and how it functions.

Running for JCL Office

While running for JCL office might seem daunting, I’m here to help you through the process. Running for office is not only a great way to give back to JCL and our community, but it also may help you grow personally - I know I had to conquer my fear of public speaking to get up on stage at GA II! If you’re at all interested in running, there will be election workshops at SCRAM and LUDI to learn more about the process and what it entails. Until then, if you have any questions, shoot me an email at [email protected].
