CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE
Dr. Ken Golden knew the healing power of chiropractic medicine first-hand, but considered several majors, including engineering and music, before getting his degree in biology and pursuing his Doctor of Chiropractic degree at NUHS. In 2007, he founded Symmergy Clinic in Indianapolis, Ind. The name of his clinic embodies his approach to healing: moving with symmetry creates synergy in the body.
According to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the job market for chiropractors is expected to grow 10 % by 2033— much faster than the average of 4 % across all occupations.

“ I have such a strong command of concepts and fundamentals that I can go in a different direction to find a solution.”
Did you always know you wanted to pursue chiropractic medicine?“ After my car accident, I was interested in it, but I started out studying mechanical engineering. Like so many college students, I went back and forth, considering music, pre-med and law. Eventually, I recognized the way my brain operates: How does something work? Why does it work that way? Why isn’ t it working?
It applies to mechanical engineers— and chiropractic physicians. It took me a while to come back to it, but chiropractic medicine makes sense. It is really streamlined with how I think.”
Why did you choose NUHS?“ NUHS teaches that true integration model. It’ s not leaning so hard to one side or the other. I liked that it was more academic and science-based, both the hard sciences and core chiropractic, non-pharmacologics, using surgical intervention when appropriate.
I really liked how we worked in groups, teaching each other. It wasn’ t rote memorization or regurgitation of facts. To this day, I remember crystal clear, certain drawings or diagrams that my classmates or I drew to help us learn.
NUHS is a huge part of me being successful in coming up with novel treatments for my patients. If something isn’ t working, I have such a strong command of concepts and fundamentals that I can go in a different direction to find a solution.”
What kind of patients are you treating?“ We see everyone— from kids to people in their 90s who want to stay active. I love working

with patients who have tried everything from surgery to injections. I really enjoy the challenge. They push me to think through that mechanical engineering process. What have we missed? There’ s always an answer there. Nine times out of ten, it is something simple. You just have to keep trying.
That’ s why I spend a lot of time in the gym. It’ s kind of my laboratory. I’ m always observing. I joke that 20 years ago, I was the weird dude using a foam roller and elastic bands. Now the gym is filled with them! I’ m now partnering with a personal trainer on a functional physical therapy lab in the office.”
What would you tell a student considering NUHS for their studies?“ I’ m a big fan! I give NUHS a ton of credit for my formative years. It created a nucleus of both knowledge and interest that allows me to do what I do now— not in a rote way, but in a dynamic way.
When I speak with medical and physical therapy colleagues, it is more than philosophy. NUHS gave me that science and medical foundation. I would encourage prospective students to visit NUHS. The program will give them a solid foundation. There are a lot of good professors, good connections in internships and externships. And there is growing opportunity in our field.
NUHS exceeded my expectations— by a lot!” ■
