A brilliant showcase of photography within the theme of film. We have certainly got an exceptional display this time around. As a lover of film and still photography I am especially delighted that this edition encompasses both.
Film and photography — a niche associated with charm and nostalgia — continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many photographers, even in the digital age. In a world dominated by pixel-perfect images and instant gratification, the enduring appeal of film photography remains steadfast. We have Gaspar Markez whose images produce a certain magic in capturing moments almost as if on film. And then Dwayne Martin, whose images are in fact all taken on film. Amazing!
We have Thomas Freyer back again, where each of his frames becomes a carefully composed work of art, and the anticipation of seeing the developed results adds an extra layer of excitement.
With photography, you identify scenes that will tell a story in a still frame. With film, you identify scenes that will work with movement and audio. These are two different skills to learn, but they are closely connected. As a photographer you notice the different elements always surrounding you, as in the photos from Jacinta and Dan Katz.
Nostalgia has become an aesthetic. Part of the appeal is that film grain gives off that vintage vibe that feels timeless. Film captures light in a specific way, rendering tones, colours, and textures with a certain richness and character that cannot be easily replicated. The inherent nature of film emulsions, combined with the choice of different film stocks, lends each photograph a particular personality and atmosphere.We hope you enjoy each artist photos and their unique interpretation of film and pictorials.
