Welcome to Nude No. 40!
We are delighted to showcase this issue’s theme of Noir/Blanc. Alongside some new photographers and their muses, and some of our well-loved faces and photographers—they’ve returned together to provide you with some more brilliant artistic expression.
Black and white photography is more about telling a story in a way that colour doesn't. It doesn’t distract the viewer from the image's beauty. It is about highlighting the subject's emotions and expressions and not just about capturing a scene.
We have Alex Tsarfin whose photos explore how our personal perceptions of beauty and appearance are shaped by societal norms and cultural conditioning.
We also have Svetlan Simov whose powerful images of both male and females in a juxtaposed role are raw and gentle at the same time. Black and white photography is by its very nature a departure from reality.
Since we do not experience scenes in monochrome, black and white photographs do not have the same emotional tethers and expectations as color photographs might. It’s up to the viewer to internalize the moment and the feeling.
Sasha Van Der Werf and Catharina Fureder’s photos use nuances of shadows to strip away artificial notions of beauty. They capture their true selves and inner beauty in a way that is both authentic and empowering . When you look at a black and white photo, you may think of timelessness. The photographs amongst these pages could have been shot currently or 50 years ago.
Stand still for a moment and enjoy the timeless art of black and white.
“Of time you would make a stream upon whose bank you would sit and watch its flowing.
Yet the timeless in you is aware of life’s timelessness,
And knows that yesterday is but today’s memory and tomorrow is today’s dream. “
