NOTHING BUT A NUMBER
The rules of dating have changed but is dating a younger
person just a man’s game or are women in it too?

The world news regularly features age gap
pairings. Yet another one appeared today of
a wealthy octogenarian tying the knot with a
twenty-something Playboy model. It’s more than
a cliché, it is real life, and it happens on a regular
basis. Of course, just because it appears to be
doomed to those of us observing, and sighing,
because we have seen it all before, we should
not dismiss the likely hopes of the pair that they
are finding true love with this spouse.
Pairings between people of big age gaps has
been something we all find fascinating, mainly

because it is not all that usual. With mass media
we hear of more of them, and perhaps the
incidence has increased a bit over the decades,
but it is still rather uncommon. Much more regular
is the pairing of people who are within five years
or so of each other’s ages, with the man almost
always the older party.
There are good biological reasons for this
traditional pairing model to be the norm. Most
people pair up for the first time in their youth,
well within breeding age for women. There have
