The doldrums had come, leaving his ship
caught in the slow current of the sea,
drifting to only the gods knew where. The
limp sails gave the only shade above deck
from the brutal sun beating down. But
then, a new noise came to his ears.
It was almost glass-like in its calmness, but in
the distance, a dark form appeared, breaking
the near-perfect surface of the horizon.
Singing? No. Not here. Not without any
shoreline in sight. But the song swelled
louder and even more compelling. Captain Jarnos went to the siderail and looked
out over the vast ocean that lay between
him and unseen land.
An outcropping of rocks slowly came into focus, and on the top, a figure. Pulling his spyglass, the Captain peered through to view the
most beautiful woman atop the rocks, and
she was singing without a care.
As the ship drifted closer, the singing grew
louder, and the form, larger.
As if she knew was watching her, she turned
her head and smiled, eyes shining brightly.
