An Investigation into the Legacies of the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games.
Abstract
The London 2012 bid was based on the ‘promise’ to ‘Inspire a Generation’. This referred to creating
legacies from hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The aim of this paper is to investigate the
legacies almost two years on from the Games, using Cashman (2003) and Chappelet’s (2006) legacy
categories. After, subdividing the legacy, it is found that there have been some successes to date,
such as the infrastructure being well utilised and the local economy benefiting from rising tourism
and exports. However, there have been some disappointing legacies, for example the lack of funding
for emerging sports and government schemes failing to educate the public on disability after the
Paralympics. The paper concludes that a clearer picture of the legacy outcomes will only emerge
after a 12 year evaluation; however there is an initial indication to suggest that the plans will
succeed.
