Senior Programs “This program has helped me so much because without this I wouldn’t be able to have food. I am so grateful that someone is thinking of others.” - Helen, Nourishing Neighbors participant The AARP Foundation and Feeding America recently reported that at least 8 million Baby Boomers across the nation are facing hunger. The increase in older Americans needing food assistance means NTFB must continue to find innovative ways to meet the demand and fulfill the specific dietary requirements that many seniors face. Our Nourishing Neighbors home-delivery program continued to prove effective in reaching seniors who face challenges leaving their home. Last year, the program served 175 homebound seniors and mature adults with disabilities. Volunteers delivered food items, including fresh produce, directly to each senior’s doorstep every two weeks. In addition to the food they received, NTFB also provided pet food for 48 seniors with four-legged friends. We also continued our joint efforts with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Texas Department of Agriculture as a Commodity Supplemental Food Program distributor. Locally recognized as PAN, or People and Nutrition, the program helped more than 8,500 low-income seniors every month by providing them with a box of USDA commodities. Through our 106 PAN distribution sites across Dallas, Collin, Denton, Ellis, Fannin and Kaufman counties, seniors received an average of 28 pounds of food each month.
