NSSRA Participants Return to Crested Butte , Colorado , for Winter Sports and Community after 2-Year Hiatus
After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association ( NSSRA ) participants returned to Crested Butte , Colorado in late february , to experience the thrills of winter sports and the warmth of community . They vacationed by the mountain in late February and hit the slopes with the Adaptive Sports Center ( ASC ). This therapeutic recreation organization offers year-round instruction in outdoor activities for people with disabilities .
staff and each other . They pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones and celebrated their accomplishments together .
As the trip ended , the NSSRA participants said goodbye to the mountain that had challenged them . They returned home with memories that will last a lifetime , grateful for the opportunity to experience the joy of outdoor recreation and the support of a community .
For the NSSRA participants , this trip was more than just a vacation . It was an opportunity to connect with friends and push their limits in a safe and supportive environment . The ASC staff tailored their instruction to each participant ' s needs , providing adaptive equipment and specialized techniques to help them confidently ski , snowshoe , and hike . One participant said , " I love skiing with ASC because they make it possible for me to do something I never thought I could do . It ' s so freeing to be out on the mountain ."
The NSSRA group also enjoyed some evening downtime , playing games and enjoying the scenery . They marveled at the snowy landscape and the quiet of the mountains , relishing in the escape from their everyday lives .
The trip came with its challenges , however . The participants endured cold conditions and snowy days on the slopes , but they persevered with the encouragement of the ASC
