BEFORE: Excessive shoulder turn causing top half of the body to move too far from original spine tilt. Weight stays on the trail side at impact and follow through. Player is unable to hit and transfer full power into the shot. a Proper Shoulder Turn
By Vincent Law, Teaching Professional, The Golfing Lab
Many may have read or seen Youtube videos that advocate a big full shoulder turn to produce a powerful swing. Unfortunately, this piece of well-meaning advice has done a lot more damage than help golfers hit it further. Some are hampered by an incorrect concept of how to create a proper shoulder turn.
AFTER: Player uses more arms and elbows to complete his back swing. He is now more centered at the top of his swing which enables him to execute a better weight shift through the shot as evidenced in the frames below
Others, due to inflexibility, create an unstable and potentially back injuring shoulder turn as they attempt to rotate around their lumbar rather than thoracic spine. Here are some examples of incorrect pivots.
