HOST INSTITUTIONS( cont’ d)

For nearly 150 years, Morgan State University has been providing the next generation of corporate, government and nonprofit leaders with the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their individual goals and advance those of society at large. From its founding as a private biblical institute to its 2005 classification as a certified Doctoral Research Institution by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Morgan has served the community with distinction.
Dr. David Wilson President Morgan State University
Each year, Morgan enrolls nearly 8,000 students in programs from the baccalaureate level through the doctorate. The University has a comprehensive curriculum with more than 90 program offerings at the undergraduate, master’ s and doctoral levels. Morgan offers a variety of programs in professional fields, including engineering, business, teacher education, architecture, hospitality management and social work. The school has traditionally placed strong emphasis on the arts and sciences at the undergraduate level and on the preparation of students for advanced study. An above-average percentage of Morgan graduates enter graduate and professional school. Historically, the University has ranked among the top public campuses nationally in the number of African American graduates receiving doctorates.
As Maryland’ s premier public urban research institution, Morgan is very proud of its diversity, attracting students from every state in the U. S. and many foreign countries. It is a true global university with many of its students coming from countries such as Nepal, Brazil, Nigeria, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. The University has consistently ranked among the best for African Americans, Hispanics, women, and veterans. Morgan ranks among Forbes’ top colleges each year.
Two of Morgan’ s strategic goals are to enhance the University’ s status as a doctoral research university and to grow its resources including the research infrastructure. The goal is to increase its research awards and contracts to $ 50M by 2020. An important way to grow Morgan’ s resources is to improve the ability for technology transfer and commercialization of the faculty’ s intellectual property.
One example of a contract award to Morgan State University is from the U. S. Army, which recently awarded the University the first phase( 16 months) of a 36-month project titled,“ Decision Engine for Unstructured and Structured Data”. This project is funded by the Test Resource Management Center( TRMC) Test and Evaluation / Science & Technology( T & E / S & T) Program through the U. S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation( PEO STRI). The goal of the project is to develop and demonstrate a decision engine for structured and unstructured data that addresses the following needs of the U. S. Army T & E community: 1) the lack of tools to efficiently filter, process, store, analyze, and retrieve vast amounts of data and 2) the limitations of existing computational software tools to extract meaningful patterns and trends from structured and unstructured data to facilitate critical decision-making. Dr. Kofi Nyarko, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering and Director of the Engineering Visualization Research Laboratory, is the principal investigator.
Morgan embraces its past but looks forward to a bright future. With its campus designated“ A National Treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the University is determined to continue its excellence in teaching, intensive research and effective public service and community engagement by living up to its motto: Growing the future, leading the world.
