Dr. Maria Thompson President Coppin State University
Founded in 1900, Coppin State University( CSU) is an urban, comprehensive Historically Black Institution within the University System of Maryland. As an anchor institution in Baltimore Maryland, CSU is deeply committed to providing educational access and diverse opportunities for all students while emphasizing its unique role in educating residents of Metropolitan Baltimore and first-generation college students. Central to CSU’ s mission and contribution is the assurance of economic competitiveness through provision of high-quality professional programs and impactful community services.
CSU offers 31 undergraduate majors, 12 graduate majors, 1 doctorate and 9 certificate programs through its four colleges: College of Arts & Sciences, and Education; College of Health Professions; College of Behavioral and Social Sciences; and the College of Business. Under the leadership of President Maria Thompson, CSU has been actively engaging students in High Tech, High Touch, and High Impact curriculum and co-curricular experiences that foster civically engaged mindset and career-ready competencies. In Fall 2015, CSU inaugurated the new Science & Technology Center( STC) which serves as the metropolitan hub for STEM( Science, Technology, Education and Math) education and research. The $ 83 million STC offers state-of-the-art learning and research facilities and hosts the STEM Center, the Center for Nanotechnology, and the Center for Organic Systhesis with funding support from private and public agencies.
In its community outreach efforts, CSU offers a broad range of engagement and development activities. The Community Nursing Health Center provides readily accessible, low cost, high quality care for CSU and the surrounding communities. The Bishop L. Robinson Sr. Justice Institute provides workforce enhancement training and certificate programs approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. To Strengthen P-12 education and community welfare in high poverty urban contexts, CSU is the first institution of higher education in the state of Maryland to operate two public charter schools and the James E. McDonald Child Development Center. Building on a legacy of excellence in teacher and administrator preparation, CSU is leading cutting-edge research and development in competencybased education and micro-credentialing aimed at creating new pathways to professions, particularly for underserved populations in underrepresented professions. Collectively, the teaching, research, service and advocacy reflect CSU’ s continuing commitment to making excellence inclusive for our shared future.
