TOWNSVILLE CITY DESK H ELLO everybody. A lot has happened around Townsville recently... there has been State and federal government funding for the Integrated Stadium and Entertainment Centre, the Singapore government committing to building combined training facilities in Townsville and Shoalwater Bay, and the federal government announcing Townsville to be the location for the first Suicide Prevention Trial Site. These projects are very good for Townsville. O NE of the most important matters concerning the entire city is water restrictions. Water is one of the essential services local governments must provide its residents. During this enduring and stubborn drought, some measures have been taken to ensure household water was not at risk. And that is why water restrictions were implemented. I understand people living in DHA properties are paying fortnightly excess water charges and DHA provides no reprieve to members in drought-affected areas. Despite this, Townsville still needs every resident to do their part in conserving as much water as possible to delay any further restrictions before the next Wet season. Council recently amended its water restrictions policy to allow residents four opportunities to water lawns and gardens. The odds and evens system still applies, but on watering days, watering is permitted from 6am7am and from 6pm-7pm. For more information about water restrictions, please click here. OWNSVILLE is hosting the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience from September 2-11 at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. The exhibition provides residents a chance to have hands-on experience with many artefacts released from the Australian War Memorial especially for the event. The event is free but bookings are essential. Book online here. F INALLY, there are a small number of tickets left for one of the premier T150 events of the year, being the Strand Gala Dinner on September 10. This will be a first-class event that serves as an anniversary of the grand opening of The Strand almost 20 years ago. Tickets can be purchased here. T - Mayor Jenny Hill RSL puts up scholarships for veterans’ children C HILDREN of Australian military veterans will get the opportunity to pursue tertiary study with a new scholarship program launched last month. Applications for each of the $12,000 RSL Queensland Scholarships, managed by the Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT), closing on October 31, for young people in Queensland doing tertiary education. RSL Queensland CEO Luke Traini said the new scholarship was about ensuring the children of former servicemen and women had an equal chance to excel in life. “Providing assistance to veterans’ children who otherwise may not have been able to obtain a tertiary education will provide a better chance of employment and financial independence,” Mr Traini said “These types of scholarships extend the welfare support we can provide to the Australian Defence Force community.” There are 355 $12,000 merit-based scholarships up for grabs, which span a three year period. Applicants must be the child of a former Australian Defence Force member and preference will be given to those in specific circumstances related to financial need, health-related hardship, or other family or personal circumstances where these could prevent them from undertaking tertiary education assistance. RSL’s Veterans Services senior advocate Dani Steffan said the scholarships were about providing further opportunities. Application forms are available from the website rslqld.org/ADF-Community/RSLScholarships or by calling (02) 9213 7999.
