Rod, 71, decided he would do “something” instead of spending his life half-awake because of the drugs he took, mostly to combat PTSD. He weaned himself off the drugs, turning to his seven-year-old crossbred bitch for support, although he hasn’t yet succeeded in getting her registered as an offi cial assistance dog. He set himself the task of honouring each of the more than 600 soldiers who died as a result of war in Vietnam and in confl icts since. He places a fl ag at the memorial in the town in which each veteran was born. Last week, Raymond Bruce Weston, a former member of Townsville RAAF unit 383 Sqn, was honoured in Rod’s simple ceremony.
