TOWNSVILLE
CITY
DESK
O
UR city has a strong,
engaged and active
Defence community and
earlier this month I was
pleased to participate in the
third Townsville Defence
Community Forum.
As we head into the last
four months of the year
some of you may be starting
to prepare for the next
chapter of your career.
For those posting out at
the end of the year don’t
forget to take advantage of
council’s free green waste
dumping at all the city’s
landfi lls and transfer stations.
You can also take
advantage of the free
dumping weekend on the
long weekend in October.
And for those who are
still here in 2018, council’s
hard waste collection
commences early next year.

W
ITH school holidays
fast approaching, this
is a good opportunity for
us all to take a break and
reconnect with families after
what has been a busy term.
Holidays can often be
challenging as we look
for activities to keep our
children occupied.
If your children are
into Lego, head along to
CityLibraries in Flinders
Street and join the
construction crew as they

Long journey of respect
R
OD Eade, a “cuisine
technician” in the
Vietnam War, is on a very
personal crusade around
Australia, and last week,
he came to Townsville.
Rod, 71, decided he would
do “something” instead of
spending his life half-awake
because of the drugs he took,
mostly to combat PTSD.
He weaned himself off
the drugs, turning to his
seven-year-old crossbred
bitch for support, although
he hasn’t yet succeeded in
getting her registered as
an offi cial assistance dog.
He set himself the task of
honouring each of the more
than 600 soldiers who died
as a result of war in Vietnam
and in confl icts since.
He places a fl ag at the
memorial in the town in
which each veteran was born.
Last week, Raymond Bruce
Weston, a former member
of Townsville RAAF unit
383 Sqn, was honoured in
Rod’s simple ceremony.
Rod Eade pays his respects to Raymond Bruce Weston, a former
RAAF member who died in 1971. Pictured with him are CSM Human
Performance WO2 Shane Andrews with a contingent of soldiers from
the Vasey Resilience Centre and CO 383Sqn WGCDR Jim Xinos,
commander of the unit with which Raymond Weston last served
