Ashley Horne 1RAR has a dream... it
involves a workshop, a graph, and a
readout saying “1000 horsepower”.
He spends many of his idle moments
thinking about the next modifi cation,
to achieve the next power boost to
his 2009 HSV Maloo and he spends
a lot of his money on it, too.
It’s all about the power delivered to
the back wheels, which is measured
on a dyno (or dynamometer, if you
want to be picky), a machine used to
measure the power of an engine.
The graph measures the horsepower
delivered to the back tyres as the
fuel is delivered to the engine,
courtesy of the accelerator.
Almost immediately after buying
it secondhand about a year ago, he
installed a new three-inch straight-
through exhaust with headers
and a Harrop Over The Radiator
(OTR) air induction system.
“Before I put the exhaust and the
OTR in, it did chew some fuel,” he
said, grimacing at the memory.
Now he gets about 13-14l/100km
around town, unless he “stomps on it”
when fuel consumption can rocket up
to about an eye-watering 64l/100kms.
The main improvement was after it
was tuned. He got a satisfying dyno
readout of 400HP at the tyres.
