3rd Brigade ’ s Innovation Day

THE “ battle space ” at the 3rd Brigade ’ s Innovation Day last month was between the ears of the participants as they tried to win the “ hearts and minds ” of the generals evaluating their ideas . CPL Eric Morris won the battle with an idea he insisted was “ nothing new ”, that “ cost nothing ”, and “ needed nothing ” to make it fly . He and his ISTAR team at 3RAR developed procedures and techniques to demonstrate an extraordinary level of detail achievable in photographs taken from long range at night using long exposures and only the available light . Delivering his pitch with a rapid-fire patter from which a car salesman could make a handsome living , he was awarded first place by the “ Brolga Tank ”. The Brolga Tank , a 3Bde facsimile of the Shark Tank from the television show , was a panel of five judges - COL Richard Barrett ( Diggerworks ), COMD 3Bde BRIG Chris Field , DG Logistics - Army BRIG Cam Purdey , DG Modernisation BRIG Chris Mills and chaired by Head Land Systems MAJGEN David Coghlan . Second place was declared a tie between SGT Daniel Trew HQ 3Bde and a 3CSSB team led by LCPL Jason Lintern . SGT Trew demonstrated attachments he had developed for the Bushmaster PMV including a work table , and an easy stable step which he said would reduce ankle injuries as soldiers dismounted from the vehicle . LCPL Lintern ’ s team developed a system for laying out power cables in the field quickly , and safely .
