OWNSVILLE’S 3rd Brigade last
month conducted an International
Military Skills Competition, the
fi rst of its kind in the region.
Teams of soldiers representing
the Papua New Guinea Defence
Force, United States Marine Corps,
Republic of Fiji Military Forces and
Falintil- For as de Defesa de Timor
Leste joined units of the Australian
Army’s 3rd Brigade to compete
in the inaugural competition.
The aim of the competition initiated
by Chief of Army LTGEN Angus
Campbell, was to build respect
and co-operation among military
forces in the Asia Pacifi c region.
Soldiers were tested with observation
exercises, endurance activities,
problem-solving challenges, quick
decision-making exercises and
navigation tasks, as well as rifl e
and pistol shooting competitions.
First-aid treatment and the ability
to call in indirect fi re support were
also tested, with the competition
including an obstacle course
and urban assault activities.
Team manager for the 3rd Fiji Infantry
Regiment LT Ilaitia Tasere said the
competition would strengthen the
standard of his nation’s military skills.
“We’re working to improve the
standard of leadership of the section
commanders as well as the individual
skills of the soldiers,” he said.
